Individual preceptorships carry a higher risk for the facility.  Nursing instructors taking students to clinical act as a 'legal buffer' for the hospital.  The responsibility for supervising those students is on the instructor (schools).   One gross misconception is that the student is 'working off the instructor's license'.   That is not a valid concept.  You don't drive with someone else's driver's license and have him assume responsibility for your speeding tickets.  Instructors and preceptors are liable for students/refreshers based on appropriate delegation and supervision.   The student/refresher always bears liability for her own actions, either individually or shared with the instructor/preceptor.  When we are asking a facility to provide one of their employees to individually precept a nurse for clinical, the hospital asks many more questions and sometimes places more restrictions as there is no instructor to act as a "legal buffer" in the event of an adverse incident.   You are by definition, a registered nurse.  You will be held accountable the same as every other registered nurse.   For this reason, many hospitals consider you a greater liability than a 'nursing student'.
