Nurse Refresher Policy and Procedure
Purpose: To establish guidelines for the creation, management, and delivery of the self study Nurse Refresher Course, in accordance with State Board of Nursing guidelines. This policy is provided to all Boards of Nursing when approval is sought or when the policy is amended and to all students prior to enrollment in the course.
1. All material, including didactic, exercises, quizzes, and exams is reviewed annually by a Master’s prepared nurse educator for accuracy, appropriateness, currency and completeness. All changes to the course curriculum are made under the direction of a Master’s prepared nurse.
2. All Board of Nursing (BON) criterion is reviewed annually for compliance.
3. The BON is provided with any and all updates to curriculum.
4. This course is designed and intended for the registered nurse level. The scope of practice for practical/vocational nurses may not extend to material provided in this course. Only nurses with an active license or a temporary permit/license will be eligible to participate in a clinical rotation.
5. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure eligibility for re-instatement or re-activation. Students are instructed to contact the BON prior to enrollment. Legal issues, disciplinary actions, or any health issues which may preclude clinical in an acute care setting should be discussed with the BON prior to enrolling in the course. The Company website is updated monthly with a list of BON’s who accept/approve this course. However, the ultimate responsibility falls to the student seeking reinstatement/reactivation to ensure that all BON requirements for his/her individual situation are addressed with the BON prior to course enrollment.
6. The Student Handbook provides detailed and specific information related to the Nurse Refresher Course. A copy is posted on the website and every student is emailed another copy at the time of course enrollment. Students are expected to adhere to the policies and procedures in the Student Handbook.
7. Students may enroll in the theory component at any time and begin course work as soon as it is received.
8.. No coursework will be sent until all payment has been received and honored.
9. The Course Monitor and the Clinical Coordinator are to be at minimum a Registered Nurse. The Course Monitor and Clinical Coordinator need not be the same individual.
10. The student is responsible for finding his/her own preceptor in his home state.
11. Didactic coursework must be successfully passed before clinical rotations can begin. No student may begin a clinical rotation until all financial responsibilities are settled, and the following have been verified; temporary license/permit, malpractice insurance, CPR, contract with facility.
12. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the appropriateness of the facility chosen, the preceptor, and clinical activities.
13. At course completion, the student will be mailed a formal certificate including the student’s full name, date of completion, 120 clock hours of theory completed, any clinical hours completed, the number of contact hours awarded, and a statement that the course was completed with a minimum passing grade of 80%. The student’s BON will be notified by Consolidated Learning Services of the student’s successful completion of the course.
